Belize Bus Drivers DGAF

Belize Bus drivers are crazy. There are no rules. There is no such thing as maximum capacity. There is no speed limit.

This past weekend we traveled inland to San Ignacio to do some excursions! We explored the ATM Cave, Caracol Mayan Ruins, and the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins. It was AMAZING. In order to get there we took on the water taxi off the island of San Pedro and then the local bus to get to our destinations.

The first bus station was in Belize City. Here there were TONS of people waiting to get onto busses to travel to friends and family for the Easter holiday. As soon as they opened the gates to the bus people started pushing, shoving and knocking anyone in there path out of the way to ensure that they got on their bus. It was a mad house. There were 15 of us and it was a miracle that we all made it onto the correct bus. Once we were all crammed on the bus we started heading inland Belize. The bus was so full and it didn't seem possible to let anyone else on but THEY STILL DID. We picked up everyone it felt like. People at bus stops, people not at bus stops, people walking down the road. Just crazy.

We took the bus to the Belize Zoo as well as other places throughout the weekend. Each bus driver was equally as crazy. In America, most of the time people can't wait to drive around busses because typically they are slow and constantly stoping but here its just the opposite. It was MADNESS. On our bus trip to Xunantunich our bus driver whipped through the mountain roads like it was nothing. He passed every car in his path and used the horn on the bus more than he didn't use it. BEEEEEEEEEEEP. Every other second. Then, as we drove around a bend our bus swerved into incoming traffic without being to see what was coming our way without hesitation. It was a very frightening experience. Thankfully WE MADE IT.

I loved (most) minutes of the bus insanity and am thankful that I will not be in need a bus for the rest of my time here. Thank you for the experience Belize bus drivers.
